Course Introduction

The Korean War is key to understand modern two Koreas. Our guides who has expertise in history, historical sociology, peace studies offer special guided tour in the Korean War Room I-III, the highlights of War Memorial of Korea.

Our tour looks closely at the birth of South & North Korea after liberation, the origins & backgrounds of the War, 4 stages of war situation, the armistice and the birth of DMZ(DeMilitarized Zone) with hidden stories that the War Momorial of Korea doesn't speak in the exhibitions.

* ITINERARY

1. Gathering at the Statue of Brothers (10 mins)
- The tour begins in front of the Statue of Brothers in the southwest corner of the War Memorial of Korea.
- Based on a true story, the Statue of Brothers illustrates one of the characteristics of the Korean War as a Civil War.
- The original plan was to build a 330m-tall memorial tower on Nodeul Island.

2. Peace Plaza (10 mins)
- The site of the War Memorial used to be the Military Headquarters.
- Directly across is the Ministry of National Defense, this area was also long home to the US military bases, aka Yongsan Garrison.
- Find flags of the 22 UN participating nations and the Korean War Monument.

3. Roll of Honor (10 mins)
- Roll of Honor, the Memorial Wall for the Fallen soldiers, is located in the left and right corridors of the War Memorial.
- It commemorates UN fallen soldiers as well as South Korean fallen soldiers.
- We examine the war casualties including North Korean and Chinese soldiers, civilian victims and separated families from both Koreas.

4. War Memorial Exhibition Halls (1 hour 30 mins)
- Explore the Memorial Hall and the Korean War Room I, II, and III
- Additional materials such as photos and graphs provided by our tour guides allow for a broad understanding of the realities of the Korean War.
- The entire tour lasts 2 hours and concludes at Korean War Room III (the participation of UN troops).
